Welcome to Upgrade!

This is a newsletter for adult learners in the greater San Antonio area. This newsletter is meant to provide you with resources, information, and upcoming events that will provide support as you complete your certificate or degree.

Introduction to Online Learning

This week, Lowell Butler, Upgrade advisor, provided an information session on online learning. Online learning brings unique challenges and opportunities. There are misconceptions about online learning being easier than the traditional classroom. The reality is that online learning is more convenient than traditional classroom setting, but not easier. Universities and colleges recommend both online and traditional learning format students spend at least 2 hours a day per course outside of class studying.

Here are some helpful tips for success with online learning:

Find a quiet place
Designate a set time to focus on your studies and stick to it, that way your family/friends can get used to your study schedule
Try to do something “school related” everyday; online learning is not casual
Do not procrastinate, once you fall behind it is extremely difficult to catch up

Don’t forget to have fun and make time for self-care

Dr. Naomi Garcia joins the Upgrade staff as a College Access & Success Advisor for the City of San Antonio employees. She is a native of San Antonio and attended Palo Alto College, University of the Incarnate Word, and Texas State University. With a PhD in Adult, Professional and Community Education and having been an adult student herself, Dr. Garcia brings passion and experience to her new role. Career Coach: This website offers wonderful information on local career trends and demand, including numbers of people currently employed in a field, how many people will be retiring, and average salaries. This includes data within a 50 mile radius.
